Simple steps for reducing lithium-ion battery fire risk at home, work, or in shared spaces
E-bikes and scooters have changed the way people move through cities, neighborhoods, campuses, warehouses, and job sites. They are efficient, practical, and often far cheaper than a car. For delivery workers, commuters, students, and families, they are not a novelty anymore. They are part of daily life.
That also means their batteries are becoming part of daily life.
Most lithium-ion batteries work safely when they are designed well, used correctly, and charged with the right equipment. The problem is that charging can start to feel routine. A bike gets plugged in near the front door. A scooter charges overnight in a hallway. A spare battery sits beside a power strip in a garage. Nothing happens the first hundred times, so the setup starts to feel safe.
That is where the risk can settle in quietly.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s latest micromobility report, released in April 2026, estimated 698,500 emergency department-treated injuries connected to micromobility products from 2017 through 2024. Why charging deserves more attention
Charging is one of the most important moments in the life of a battery.
During charging, energy is being pushed back into the pack. If the battery is damaged, poorly made, deeply degraded, exposed to the wrong temperature, paired with the wrong charger, or missing reliable protection circuitry, the risk can increase. A failing battery may release flammable gases, produce intense heat, ignite nearby materials, or spread from one cell to the next. In a hallway, apartment, bedroom, shop, or shared charging area, that can leave very little margin for error.
Safer charging is mostly about giving yourself more margin.
Use the charger that came with the device
This is the least exciting advice and probably the most important.
Use the charger supplied by the manufacturer, or one the manufacturer specifically recommends for that exact battery and device. Avoid “universal” chargers, bargain replacements, or anything that only appears to fit. A plug that matches the port does not mean the charger is correct.
FDNY tells consumers to follow manufacturer charging instructions and use the manufacturer’s cord and power adapter made for the device. UL Standards & Engagement gives similar guidance and warns that counterfeit and unapproved replacement batteries do not offer the same protections as batteries evaluated to recognized safety standards. This matters because the charger and battery are part of the same safety system. Voltage, current, charge profile, connector design, and battery management protections all matter. A cheap charger may save money up front and create risk later.
Look for certified products, not just good reviews
Online reviews can be useful for comfort, range, and customer service. They are not a substitute for safety certification.
When buying an e-bike, scooter, replacement battery, or charger, look for products that have been evaluated by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. UL 2849 is used for e-bike electrical systems and examines the drive train, battery system, and charger system combination. UL 2272 applies to personal e-mobility devices such as powered scooters. Certification is not a magic shield. A certified product can still be damaged, abused, repaired poorly, or charged incorrectly. But it does mean the product has been evaluated against a recognized safety standard. That is a much stronger signal than a low price, fast shipping, or a long list of five-star comments.
This is especially important with replacement batteries. A battery from an unknown seller may look close enough. It may even fit. But if it was not designed for that device, or if it lacks proper internal protections, it can change the risk profile completely.
Do not charge overnight or unattended
A lot of people charge e-bikes and scooters the way they charge phones: plug them in before bed, unplug them in the morning.
That habit does not translate well.

The safer habit is simple: charge while someone is awake, nearby, and able to notice a problem.

A battery that fails while someone is home and awake is still serious. A battery that fails while people are sleeping is far more dangerous.
Keep charging away from exits
This point deserves more attention than it usually gets.
Never charge an e-bike or scooter where it could block the way out. That includes apartment doors, bedroom doors, stairwells, hallways, and windows used for escape. This is one of the simplest changes a household or business can make. Move charging away from escape paths. Keep exits clear. Do not let convenience decide the charging location.

Charge on a hard, open surface
Do not charge on beds, couches, rugs, cardboard, cluttered workbenches, or near piles of clothing, paper, packaging, gasoline, solvents, or other combustible materials.
FDNY advises charging and storing batteries away from anything flammable, plugging chargers directly into a wall outlet, and charging on the floor rather than on other surfaces. It also advises charging outside if possible and keeping batteries and devices at room temperature. (FDNY Smart)
A good charging area is boring. That is the point.
It should be open, stable, dry, and away from anything that can quickly catch fire. In a garage or shop, that may mean creating a dedicated charging zone. In an apartment, it may mean choosing a clear section of floor away from doors and furniture, then unplugging the device once charging is complete.
For shared spaces, the charging area should not be an afterthought. It should be planned.
Avoid extension cords and overloaded power strips
Extension cords and power strips can add another weak point to the setup. They may be undersized, damaged, overloaded, or used in ways they were never meant to handle.

This is not just about the battery. It is about the whole charging environment. A charger plugged into a worn extension cord, routed under a rug, connected to a crowded power strip, and placed beside combustible storage is a very different situation from a charger plugged directly into a wall outlet in a clear area.
Safe charging is rarely one big decision. It is usually a series of small decisions that either reduce risk or stack it.
Retire damaged or questionable batteries
A battery does not have to be on fire to be unsafe.
Stop using a battery or device if you notice unusual heat, swelling, leaking, odor, discoloration, odd noises, smoke, sparking, or a change in shape. Damage matters, too. If a scooter battery was dropped hard, involved in a crash, exposed to water, repaired by someone unqualified, or paired with the wrong charger, it should be treated with caution.
The same goes for “rebuilt” packs, homemade batteries, or bargain replacements. CPSC’s proposed rulemaking package specifically discusses risks tied to modified, homemade, aftermarket, and replacement batteries and chargers in micromobility products.
The hard part is that a risky battery may still work. It may still charge. It may still power the bike.
That does not mean it is safe.
Unplug when charging is complete
Overcharging is not the only concern, especially with a properly designed battery management system, but leaving a device plugged in longer than needed is still a poor habit.
Unplug the charger once the battery is charged. Do not leave the pack sitting on the charger for days. Do not treat the charger as storage.

Think differently about workplace and shared charging
At home, one person may be responsible for one bike or scooter. Shared spaces are different.
A workplace, delivery hub, apartment building, campus, repair shop, or fire station may have several people charging devices in the same area. Different chargers. Different batteries. Different habits. Different levels of attention.
That is where informal charging gets risky.
Shared charging areas should have clear rules: approved chargers only, no damaged batteries, no blocked exits, no overnight unattended charging unless the space is specifically designed and monitored for it, and no storage of questionable batteries near active charging. There should also be a plan for what to do if a battery starts making noise, smelling strange, swelling, smoking, or heating abnormally.
People should not have to improvise during a battery failure.
Dispose of batteries the right way
Old or damaged lithium-ion batteries should not go in household trash or regular recycling.

This matters because battery fires do not only happen in homes. They also happen in trash trucks, recycling facilities, transfer stations, and storage areas where damaged or improperly discarded batteries are crushed, punctured, or mixed with combustible materials.
If a battery is swollen, damaged, leaking, or behaving strangely, contact your local waste authority or fire department guidance before moving or disposing of it. Do not throw it in a bin and hope someone else handles it safely later.
A simple charging routine that works
For most people, safer charging comes down to a few habits that can become routine:
Use the correct charger. Charge while awake and nearby. Keep the device away from exits. Plug directly into a wall outlet. Charge on a hard, clear surface. Keep batteries away from heat, cold, water, and combustible materials. Stop using damaged batteries. Unplug when charging is complete. Recycle batteries properly.
None of that is complicated.
The challenge is consistency.
